How to help expatriate partners cope with change

In previous posts we have mentioned the challenges and difficulties that any expatriate may face in their international assignment; however, there is no mention of the fact that the vast majority of work assignments are accompanied by partners.

In 2021, a total of 12,420 expatriates participated in the global network InterNations' Expat Insider survey, which indicated that 63% move with their partner when accepting work abroad. And, while every international move comes with exciting cultural changes and challenges, expat partners or spouses may face other hurdles.

One of them may be the inability to continue their professional careers or jobs abroad, either because of restrictions in the destination country or other reasons, such as language, that don't allow them to maintain their occupation and thus distract themselves from the culture shock.

👉 Read our article to learn 8 tips for BEFORE moving to another country.

Even taking into account that, depending on the length of the assignment, the couple may choose to remain apart at a distance or embark on the adventure, the decision will certainly not be taken lightly. The reality of moving away from your home and usual social circle can have an impact on the relationship and even on the success of the assignment. Therefore, in this article, we list some suggestions for those partners who are unable to work at the new destination.

1. Share your concerns
When settling in a new country it will probably be difficult to adapt during the first weeks, trying to separate possible fears or uncertainties from reality. This is where trust and communication between the two of you will be key. By venting your fears about what you don't know yet, you will come to see that you are not alone.
* Look for blogs and articles to learn more about the new place and its traditions, and to find new experiences.

2.Take care of yourself! Mental health is important too
Suffering from relocation grief or developing the often-called 'expat depression' is more common and natural than you might think. A high percentage of people who move abroad experience it, being a completely personal process. However, there are worrying limits as depression is not just feeling sad or homesick, but remaining with certain symptoms for a prolonged period of time, such as the following:

    • Lack of energy
    • Lack of interest in new or previous activities
    • Guilt or feelings of uselessness
    • Poor concentration
    • Difficulty in making decisions
    • Feeling of instability
    • Changes in appetite

👉 If any of these symptoms are present, it is important to ask for recommendations and consult with health professionals in the new country.

3. Expand your social circle
In any place and situation, it will always be important to meet new people and maintain meaningful relationships in your life. Therefore, if work is no longer an option for socializing, you may want to consider using forums, groups, or communities of people and couples who are in the same situation and can welcome you to this different culture.
* Keep in mind that the ways of socializing and customs may vary. Something you consider a friendly gesture may even be offensive depending on the country.

4. Consider continuing your education
If you are unable to continue with your previous job or business (even though 'home office' is more common nowadays), it could be a great option to continue with your academic education. This time abroad could be used to learn a new skill, take courses or hobbies that interest you such as local cuisine, or even expand your knowledge of your current profession, thus improving your resume for when you return to your old home.

5. Use who you are to help others
Whatever country or city you are moving to, there are bound to be options for organizations where you can help people by volunteering. If possible, you could even use your professional experience to adapt what you know to help those in need. This can also be an opportunity to gain experience in other areas of work, acquire different hobbies and meet more people.
